I've been asked this over and over since writing about 1090F.
What can we actually do?
First, the frustrating part. No petition can magically make 1090F untouchable.
Mollie's Pack is currently outside Yellowstone National Park on Wyoming's Shoshone National Forest, in Wolf Hunt Area 1. Wyoming has approved its 2026 wolf season, and Areas 1 and 2 have a combined quota of four wolves.
The season in Area 1 opens September 15.
Advocates already asked the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission to exempt Area 1 from the hunt. The Commission said no.
But that doesn't mean there's nothing left to do.
Ask for something specific.
Rather than sending a general message saying Save the wolves, people are asking the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission for a very specific action:
Temporarily close Wolf Hunt Area 1 while Mollie's Pack remains there. That's a much narrower request than ending wolf hunting in Wyoming. It doesn't require changing Wyoming's entire wolf-management program.
It recognizes the unusual circumstances surrounding a historically important Yellowstone research pack that moved beyond a political boundary it cannot possibly understand.
And public pressure isn't meaningless.
Wildlife commissions hear from hunters, ranchers, outfitters, conservation organizations, biologists and members of the public when they make wildlife-management decisions. And know that there are absolutely ranchers, hunters, and outfitters out there who do agree that targeting 1090F is ethically wrong.
If this matters to you, contact the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission respectfully.
Tell them why. Talk about Mollie's Pack's research value. Talk about 1090F's extraordinary age and the scientific value of following a known wild wolf through an entire natural lifetime. Talk about the value of an intact, long-studied Yellowstone pack.
And ask specifically for a temporary closure of Hunt Area 1 while Mollie's Pack remains there.
But there's something else I want to say. Please don't harass the hunter. Don't threaten him. Don't try to identify his home, family, employer or personal information. Don't organize people to interfere with a lawful hunt. There's a huge difference between venting and harassment.
Don't give anyone an excuse to turn a discussion about wildlife management into a discussion about the behavior of wolf advocates.
If we want wildlife decisions based on science, ethics and thoughtful management, then that's how we should behave too.
There's also a bigger fight beyond one wolf. 1090F's situation exposes an old problem with Yellowstone wolves. Yellowstone has boundaries. Wolves don't.
An animal can spend years protected and studied inside the park, cross an invisible line while following prey or establishing territory, and suddenly exist under completely different rules.
1090F didn't make a political statement when Mollie's Pack left Yellowstone. She's a wolf. She followed what wolves follow. Food. Territory. Family.
Whether Wyoming changes anything before September 15, I don't know. But if you're going to speak for her, make your voice useful.
Be respectful. Be factual. And ask for something officials can actually do.
