The Rooster

The Rooster The Rooster, a popular American and soup restaurant located on Sansom Street in the heart of Center City, was known not only for its delicious meals but also for its charitable mission. Formerly known as Rooster Soup Company (RSC), this diner-style Jewish deli was operated by the team behind Federal Donuts. RSC donated 100% of its net profits to the Broad Street Hospitality Collaborative, a non-profit organization that provided meals and services to Philadelphia's most vulnerable residents. The menu, created by Chef Erin O'Shea, featured seasonal dishes made with fresh vegetables sourced from neighboring farms and rich chicken stock from un-used chicken backs at Federal Donuts. By utilizing ingredients that would have otherwise gone to waste, RSC was able to reduce food costs and allocate more funds towards supporting BSHC. Unfortunately, The Rooster has permanently closed.

Dear Friends,

It is with sadness that we write to inform you that our restaurant The Rooster will close, effective June 8th. As you might expect, the cause is financial. Although the restaurant started strong two and half years ago, for well over a year we have been funding losses out of pocket in an effort to buy time for The Rooster to find its footing. For a restaurant whose fundamental premise is to generate funds for our non- profit partner, this has become an untenable and counterproductive situation.

This is not the first restaurant we have closed and will likely not be the last. But while The Rooster will not live on in its current form, we feel compelled to reflect on what we have accomplished. Because somehow, this tiny, subterranean diner sparked a national conversation about the role of hospitality in building a just society.

What people say

The Rooster, located on Sansom Street in Philadelphia, is not just your average American restaurant. It goes above and beyond by serving delicious meals while also making a positive impact on the community. What sets The Rooster apart is its commitment to giving back - 100% of its net profits benefit the Broad Street Hospitality Collaborative, an organization that provides meals and services to Philadelphia's most vulnerable residents.

One of the highlights of The Rooster is Chef Erin O'Shea's seasonal menu. She incorporates fresh and flavorful vegetables from neighboring farms, ensuring that every dish is bursting with taste and goodness. But what makes it even more special is the rich chicken stock made from unused chicken backs donated by their sister establishment, Federal Donuts. This innovative approach not only reduces food waste but also allows The Rooster to donate even more money to support BSHC's important work.

The dedication to sustainability and social responsibility doesn't stop there. The Rooster's Kickstarter campaign attracted an impressive 1,587 backers who invested $179,380 to create the seed capital needed to make their dream of a more just and prosperous Philadelphia a reality. This level of community support speaks volumes about the values behind this establishment.

In addition to its admirable mission, The Rooster offers a diner-style Jewish deli experience that will leave you craving for more.
