Today is the day! Philly’s meal delivery service Home Appetit Philly and chef Antimo DiMeo of Bardea Food & Drink Group in Wilmington are partnering on a special Charity Chef Collab for this week only.
You’ll find two of chef Antimo’s dishes on H.A.’s menu; H.A. will donate a portion of sales to a nonprofit of chef Antimo’s choice. He has selected Food Bank of Delaware, an organization he cares deeply about. Says Antimo:
“The Food Bank makes a real difference through genuine connection and impactful support, but their mission includes a special needs program which has directly helped a very close family member. Working with them reminds me of the power of food and that it’s more than sustenance—it gives hope, comfort and creates positive change.”
His dishes? Gnocchi with truffle fontina cream, mushroom xo and short rib, and Brussels sprouts with sweet and spicy Calabrian chili agrodolce and stracciatella drizzle. (Hello!)

Neither Irish, Nor Potato ☘️🥔
I had never heard of “Irish Potatoes” until I moved to Philadelphia twenty years ago. At first, I assumed I was just out of the know not being Irish and all, but I later learned that the coconut-based delight has real Philadelphia roots. Maddie Marriott digs deeper into the history of this candy for us.
- Jen Honovic Herczeg, Publisher
———
The moniker of “Irish potatoes” is a bit of a misnomer — the Philly delicacy is neither Irish nor made from potatoes.
Instead, it’s a matter of appearance. The cinnamon-coated coconut cream (try saying that five times fast) is made to resemble a half-dollar sized version of the hearty starch shrouded in Irish history.
Though entrenched in lore, historical sources trace the origins of the candy to the late 19th or early 20th centuries, when an influx of Irish immigration coincided with an explosion of candy shops in Philadelphia. By 1917, Philly was known as the candy capital of the United States with over 130 shops and manufacturers and was home to one of the largest populations of Irish immigrants in the country.
“The candies were supposedly first made to honor Irish immigrants and the potato famine that had taken place in Ireland,” says David Lamparelli, a second-generation candymaker at family-owned O’Ryan’s Irish Potatoes.
