Two Januarys ago, we coaxed photographer to accompany us and .time.becomes.a.loop to Villavallelonga, Abruzzo for the celebratory week of Sant'Antonio and their Panarda. We didn't know just how brilliant an eye Marco had, nor how intelligent his sensibility (and good company as well). His photos became the basis for a feature, and are now in the just-opened in Galatina, Puglia (link in bio).

Marco's photos capture Villavallelonga's unvarnished beauty and its traditions, centered around food as a way of building and sustaining community, as convivial rite, an opportunity to share, and look after our neighbors. His work is astonishing, and the space itself an evocative gallery setting.

We're incredibly proud to call Marco our friend, and to have played a role in this project (you might recognize us at 00:12). The runs until November 8th.

In keeping with 19 years of tradition, we're closed for Labor Day in honor of the workers responsible for whatever greatness America possesses.

Working people - not billionaire Bond villains and grifting, criminal gas bags - built our city and country, sacrificed and continue to give their all for the rights we still cling to, our freedoms now in jeopardy. There's no world worth living in without the humans who do the work. We'd do just fine without robots and tech bros.

Enjoy this day with friends, loved ones, and whatever you've got going. We'll be back at it tomorrow and Wednesday nights for our weekly Neighborhood Night series (spaghetti & meatballs!), and half-price select bottles at the bar every Tuesday night.

In January 2025, we convinced photojournalist Marco Zorzanello from Vicenza, Italy, to join us in Villavallelonga (a town of 900 souls in Abruzzo's mountains), for the week of Sant'Antonio Abate. "Villa" is where the Panarda tradition originates, and where we continue to find inspiration. A year later, Marco's work was featured in National Geographic, and is now part of an upcoming photography festival in Galatina, Puglia. We're thrilled to have helped bring attention to this place and its traditions - things that, given the times in which we're living, seem more and more unlikely and miraculous.

From the festival's description:

"Marco Zorzanello & 'La Panarda': Food As Community Ritual

"From the family nucleus to the community dimension: 'La Panarda' by Marco Zorzanello is dedicated to the ancient ritual accompanying the feast of Sant'Antonio Abate in Villavallelonga, in the Abruzzo hinterland, every January 16th. This banquet, which can include more than fifty courses, obeys a fundamental rule: no one should leave the table, and no one should be left alone or hungry. The photographer also follows the journey of Francis Cretarola, Catherine Lee, and chef Andrew Wood, who traveled from Philadelphia to Abruzzo to experience La Panarda and bring its spirit back to the US. The ritual thus becomes more than the preservation of a tradition: it is a social device capable of crossing the Atlantic, reconstructing genealogies, and reactivating forms of solidarity."

The Yeast Photo Festival runs in Galatina from September 11-November 8 (link in bio).

We took it upon ourselves, ownership and Andrew Michael Wood, to stare into the maw of some of Italy's most beautiful, evocative places and sacrifice ourselves for your edification and enjoyment (you're welcome). From the Marsica in Abruzzo, through Molise and Basilicata, and finally to the unbearably stunning Salento in Puglia, we took all the punishment some of the world's best saffron, caciocavallo, burrata, pastas, roasted meats, crudo di mare and w**es could deliver. We never faltered, often forcing ourselves to have seconds. And damnit, we'd do it again.

Andrew is back in Philly: look for some menu changes and specific additions soon.
