No alleyway too small, and no volume too large: 🎯 Get a quote for your business πŸ‘‰

There are so many reasons to start composting, but for businesses we’ve narrowed it down to these top five:

1️⃣ It’s good for your reputation and client experience: when you start composting, you send a clear message about your values and respect for our neighborhoods - and the planet! Have a block that doesn’t smell like putrid dumpsters is also a plus, especially if you have outdoor seating or open windows.

2️⃣ Less overage fees from your haulers: food waste is voluminous AND heavy - and can often fluctuate in volume way more than anything else in your waste stream. When you start composting, your dumpsters will fill more predictably, reducing overage fees.

3️⃣ Less rats: self-explanatory.

4️⃣ You’re keeping your money local when you compost with us - and that’s something that actually matters to Philadelphians.

5️⃣ Good karma - and excellent compost: perfect for outdoor planters and living decor.

Still not convinced? The numbers speak for themselves: we pick up from over 150 Philadelphia businesses every week. Give us a call πŸ“ž and learn why!

Last fall, we received a grant from Closed Loop Partners and to increase our capacity to accept compostable, single use items.

Let’s face it: single use items aren’t going anywhere. We’re busy, we’re on the go, and convenience isn’t a crime. BUT - there’s a version of convenience that doesn’t cost the planet, and that’s where compostable options come in:

When it’s certified compostable and processed correctly, these items break down into a nutrient rich soil amendment instead of sitting in a landfill for centuries.

This grant is helping us build the infrastructure to actually close that loop - so when you grab a compostable produce bag or toss a paper plate in your , it has somewhere real to go.

We collect it, process it, and turn it back into the rich compost that feeds local soil. It’s not *actually* magic, but it kind of feels like it.

A can make all the difference when it comes to rain water runoff - and helps , too! πŸπŸ¦‹

Our 30g raised bed mix and are the perfect soil for your rain garden project. Did you know πŸ’‘ that soil enriched with high-quality compost can hold up to 20 TIMES more water than barren soil? (That's 1 cup v. 1.25 gallons!)

Here's how to get started:
πŸ’¦ Scout your property for the best location; take note of where water naturally flows and collects.
πŸ’¦ If you have a tight property, consider placing a large, raised bed planter directly under your down spout.
πŸ’¦ If you have a poured concrete back yard, consider replacing it with water-permeable pavers.

Here's a list of plants that work well for the Philadelphia-area's climate and ecosystem:

🌸 Blue flag iris (Iris versicolor)
🌸 Joe Pye w**d (Eupatorium dubium)
🌸 Cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis)
🌸 New England aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae)
🌸 Culver's root (Veronicastrum virginicum)
🌸 Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis)
🌸 Ostrich fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris)

🌿 Bottlebrush grass (Hystrix patula)
🌿 Broomsedge (Andropogon virginicus)
🌿 Eastern narrowleaf sedge (Carex amphibola)
🌿 Pennsylvania sedge (Carex pennsylvanica)

Here's the best part - Philadelphia Water Department Rain Check program can help you out with the costs of building your new rain garden - up to $1500 total! That's a deal too good not to consider! πŸ‘‰ pwdraincheck.org

It's from the 9th to 17th! πŸ’šπŸŒ³ Did you know that public parks are the primary way most Americans encounter green spaces in their communities?

As Philadelphians, we're blessed with so many unique green spaces, from our city squares, to Fairmount Park, community gardens, the Schuylkill trails, the new Viaduct Green - and so many more.

These are some of the last places in our community where you can go to just exist - without the pressure or expectation of spending money. That's special, and something worth supporting.

This week and throughout the summer season, do what you can to keep our parks clean! This can be as informal as picking up litter you see on your walk, to volunteering your time for longer-term efforts. However you contribute, every little bit matters and makes a difference.

Ps. We're proud partners of the city + , and help keep both and greens (like w**ds) out of landfills. Then, we compost all that, and return it to the parks! ♻️

Special shout out to The Spring Gardens Community Garden for serving as a hub for our bike pickup in for serving as a hub for our bike pickup in the Spring Garden neighborhood!

It sparkles, it’s , it’s πŸ’― : say hello to Gritty, a blend of crushed glass sourced locally from Philadelphia’s own Bottle Underground, our locally-made compost, and biochar, designed for + growing.

Here’s a fact that blew our minds:πŸ’‘Sand is the second-most consumed resource globally after water, and its mining wreaks havoc on ecosystems. We love bees (and if you're here, we bet you do, too!) Did you know:

Our is made from collected by households like yours - AND businesses throughout Philly! Businesses generate much more food waste than a household, so when they start composting the impact is on a whole different scale. Here’s how much just three of our commercial composters have diverted so far:

🍞 - 30,208 lbs
β˜•οΈ - 13,440 lbs
πŸ₯¬ - 640,461 lbs

Thanks to a grant from + to update our Rising Sun Facility, we will be able to accept a greater volume of products from our commercial composters.

That means less landfill waste, AND a stronger incentive for our commercial partners to think about the full journey of their materials, from how they source to where it all ends up.

has made major strides when it comes to in the last decade:

🌱
Let's start with - the city created a model for decentralized composting when Pennsylvania issued its first-ever urban composting permit to us in 2022.

We also currently work with the city to reduce at its rec centers, and at its agricultural sciences high school, WB Saul, among other projects. We're also partnering with hyper-local organizations, like the New Kensington CDC, to create innovative new composting solutions for neighborhood residents.

🚫
The Plastic Bag Ban has eliminated an estimated 200 million plastic bags from distribution since 2022, reducing pollution in our vulnerable city ecosystems, especially watersheds.

πŸ’¦
The Green City, Clean Waters initiative is a 25-year stormwater management program using rain gardens, green roofs, permeable pavement, and bioswales to capture runoff and reduce urban flooding

🌳
The Philly Tree Plan outlines a 10-year strategy to expand the city's tree canopy, particularly in underserved neighborhoods, to reduce urban heat islands and improve air quality.

Every day, your choices add up to the city you actually live in. When you start composting, you're voting for a city that smells better, has fewer overflowing trash bags on the sidewalk, and gives pests and rodents less reason to stick around.

You're choosing a city that's self-reliant, one that takes the organic material right here in our neighborhoods and turns it into something useful - rather than shipping the problem somewhere else.

And more than anything, you're choosing to be the kind of person who doesn't look away from their own footprint. In a city working as hard as Philly is to build a more sustainable future, that accountability, practiced block by block, household by household, is what makes all the difference.

Did you know there's a "farm school" right here in Philadelphia? It's called the WB Saul High School of Agricultural Sciences, and it's in the city's Roxborough neighborhood.

We've partnered with W.B. Saul High School of Agricultural Sciences since 2013. Saul is the city's We both manure from the school's livestock operations and from the cafeteria, saving the School District of Philadelphia thousands of dollars in disposal fees while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Beyond the operational composting work, we provide in-class and hands-on education to Saul students, teaching them the science and practice of composting. We've also hosted interns from W.B. Saul High School, as well as from Lankenau and Lincoln High Schools, as part of our work with the Philadelphia School District.

Through these internships, we give students practical vocational experience in the composting industry and connect them directly to Saul's mission of preparing students to address modern environmental and agricultural challenges through hands-on learning. The compost we produce gets delivered back to support school activities and student scholarships.
