Originally flourishing during the post-Civil War era, Philadelphia Yacht Club quickly became a haven for boat enthusiasts and yachting aficionados. The club's popularity soared as gentlemen members flocked to enjoy weekends filled with camaraderie and escape from the city's heat. The club's location on the Delaware River, south of the Schuylkill River and the Navy Yard in Essington PA, provided the perfect backdrop for leisurely days spent sailing and exploring boats.
During its peak, Philadelphia Yacht Club boasted impressive buildings and piers, even having its own stop on the local railroad. Members were treated to exquisite meals prepared by a dedicated house staff and served by liveried servers. Evenings were filled with card games and other preferred pastimes, creating an atmosphere of relaxation and enjoyment.
Unfortunately, financial hardships brought about by the Great Depression led to a temporary suspension of operations during World War II. However, in 1986, Philadelphia Yacht Club experienced a revival when interested boaters joined forces with those at Piers 3 and 5 to reincorporate the club. In April 1987, this beloved establishment was once again open for business.
Since then, Philadelphia Yacht Club has continued to thrive as a hub for boating enthusiasts. With an initial membership of over 110 individuals, monthly meetings held at various locations have fostered a sense of community among members. The recent completion of the Philadelphia Marine Center at piers 12 through 24 on the Delaware River has further enhanced the club's appeal.
