Knowing your city makes you better at your job, and working the polls is one of the best ways to build that connection.
Reflecting on years of volunteering and nearly six months of work with City of Philadelphia Government's City Commissioners Office, Jeff Barg's latest blog makes a compelling case for showing up, forming relationships, and staying engaged with where you live.
It isn't time away from your work. It's the foundation of it.

Fear isn't a strategy. For nonprofit leaders, communications can no longer be an afterthought in a landscape defined by political scrutiny, funding volatility, and AI-shaped narratives.
Drawing on insights from the 2025 Nonprofit Directors Dialogue at the Barnes Foundation, Jessica Sharp outlines that communication is now core governance work, not a downstream tactic. A quality narrative can strengthen trust, sharpen mission clarity, and position organizations to lead rather than react.

Philadelphia City Commissioners has recruited over 500 new poll workers since the start of last month's campaign!
The Philadelphia City Commissioners aimed to recruit 250 new poll workers citywide in February, honoring the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The recruitment push was a resounding success ahead of the May 19 primary election. Of the new poll workers, more than 100 are high school students who applied via the city’s Involved at 17 program, which encourages 17-year-olds to serve as poll workers.
The results were reported at a press conference anouncing the launch of the Election Academy, a joint effort with Committee of Seventy to build transparency and trust in elections. The new initiative will help Philadelphians understand how elections work and how to participate with confidence.
The Election Academy will kick off with a March 21 event from 10:30 am to noon at the Philadelphia City Commissioners Warehouse (11311 Roosevelt Blvd.). Registered voters can sign up at seventy.org or by calling 215-557-3600. Participation is free.

Black History Month stands as a reminder that America's 250-year story is not complete without Black voices, leadership, and legacy.
Here in Philadelphia, preserving and elevating Black history has faced real challenges. These stories are essential to our city's history and collective progress. We remain committed to supporting Black voices and standing firmly against racism and systemic injustice, this month and every month.
