Welcome to The Camac Street Reader: a series where we celebrate the art, history, and culture that our community is built on.
Every year, on the first Sunday of Munich’s Oktoberfest, the massive Bräurosl tent — usually packed with lederhosen and brass bands — becomes one of the biggest gay parties in Bavaria. It’s called Gay Sunday, the centerpiece of “Rosa Wiesn” (Pink Oktoberfest). The tradition started over 40 years ago when the Munich Lions Fe**sh Club, a gay leather and fe**sh club, simply wanted a place to meet during the festival. What began as one reserved section has grown into an institution — drawing thousands of LGBTQ+ visitors for a day of dirndls with a twist, drag, and Bavarian folk mixed with pop anthems.
Join us September 17th at 5:30pm for a four-course dinner with German beer pairings, led by bartender Natira (of U Bar fame) and kicked off by an exciting amuse-bouche from Chef Bob — just $65 per person.

Summer’s saying goodbye and we’re throwing it a proper send-off — SUM of our favorites, one last time.
Starter: Charred corn arancini, charred corn aioli, scallion, pecorino — crispy, smoky, everything end-of-summer should taste like.
Chef’s Catch: Char-grilled red grouper, grilled summer veg, piquillo pepper sauce, scallion oil. An ode to the season we’re not ready to let go of.
And the finale: Chef Bob’s decadent twist on a Philly classic — butter cake tart, à la mode, hazelnut crumble. Nothing says goodbye to summer quite like this.

Caught up with Sarah this week to gossip about this summer’s hottest cocktail: the Pink Lady. One part El Jimador Blanco, fresh watermelon juice, lime, and a homemade mint syrup. Her review? “Somewhere between a fruit salad and a bad decision.”

Pork filet mignon is on specials this week and it means business.
Tender, perfectly cooked, plated with a fried latke that somehow makes an already great dish better — crispy, golden, a little unexpected in the best way. French beans keep things honest. Red plum reduction ties it all together perfectly — the one bite that makes total sense, unlike your last situationship.

Grilled peach, golden beet & burrata salad, because summer isn’t over till we say it’s over.
Pork filet mignon with a fried latke and red plum reduction, for the people who take dinner seriously.
Banana bread pudding with peanut butter whiskey crème anglaise, for the people who take dessert more seriously.
Rainbow trout, preserved lemon vinaigrette, shaved golden bar squash, watercress, almonds, shaved red onion — Middle Eastern flavors doing the most, and doing it well. It’s the one you’ll be thinking about tomorrow. It’s the one you’re seeing right now. 🌈🐟

Welcome to The Camac Street Reader: a series where we celebrate the art, history, and culture that our community is built on.
Four years before Stonewall, Philadelphia made LGBTQ history of its own. Dewey’s was a popular 24-hour diner at 17th and Ludlow, a Rittenhouse Square hangout known for its late-night crowd of drag queens, s*x workers, and gender-nonconforming youth.
In early 1965, after complaints about a “rowdy” crowd, management began refusing service to anyone who looked gay or gender-nonconforming, with staff turning away masculine women, feminine men, and “persons wearing nonconformist clothing.” On April 25, 1965, over 150 people were denied service in a single day. Three teenagers refused to leave and staged a sit-in, directly inspired by the Black civil rights movement’s lunch counter protests. They were arrested alongside Janus Society president Clark P***k, sparking a week of leafleting and a second sit-in on May 2. Facing continued pressure, Dewey’s reversed its policy — one of the earliest victories for LGBTQ rights in the country.
Today, a historical marker stands in Rittenhouse Square, honoring three unnamed teenagers who refused to be pushed out of their own hangout.
