Full house on a rainy and blustery evening for our conversation with Michael Rex!
- -
Growing up in the New Zealand countryside, immersed in the arts, crafts and traditions of both Māori and Anglo cultures, Michael Rex fell in love with Ruth Asawa’s artistic language the first time he saw her work at David Zwirner Gallery in NY in 2017.
Asawa learned the looped-wire technique during a visit to Toluca, Mexico, in 1947. Earlier this year, the MOMA retrospective of Asawa’s work reminded us that her artistry and creativity extend far beyond her famous sculptures.
Let’s not forget that one does not create out of a vacuum.
“Learn something. Apply it. Pass it on so it is not forgotten.” (Ruth Asawa)

FRIEDAexcursion:
The Whitney Biennial generates commentary, likes, dislikes... as art should.
Including deceased artists or artwork created 30 or 40 years ago raises questions.
As always, The Whitney tour guide provided valuable context and information. Discussing our visit with other group members afterward enriches the experience for everyone.

FRIEDAcommunity would like to thank Mark Stephens and Tom Elwell for many hours dedicated to installing the upcoming exhibition.
FRIEDAcommunity would not be as lively and nurturing as it is without its members, volunteers, and donors.

An extraordinary evening:
More than 50 people gathered at FRIEDA for an in-depth artist talk and dinner with Yassi Deylami, surrounded by her architecturally impressive, imaginative work.
Surprise bonus: the unveiling of Yassi’s sketchbook in the form of a breath-taking 50-foot scroll.

Two FRIEDA excursions to the new Princeton University Art Museum. Two guided tours focused on different highlights, offering many choices from the extensive collection that connects thousands of years of art making. One gallery playfully displays Roberto Lugo’s “Orange and Black” alongside Greek Antiquity art.
Nick Cave’s gentle giant “Let me kindly introduce myself”, a mixed-media wall-relief inspired by one of the artist’s soundsuits (2008), welcomes visitors.

“…
Through charcoal, pastel, and printmaking, Yassi allows forms and creatures to surface intuitively. What once appeared as demons reveal themselves as exiled parts seeking recognition and home. Her immersive works draw viewers into threshold spaces that house the unconscious, inviting self-reflection and vulnerability. In a digital age of surfaces and distraction, Yassi’s work offers a turn inward — toward shared human truths and the desire to feel whole.
